arising beauty: a landmark gateway to new york’s busiest train station

With the spectacular curved cable façade at the entrance of Penn Station, seele created an architectural statement in the heart of Manhattan. The 12 m high “A” of steel and glass forms the East End Gateway on 33rd Street – an impressive entrance that welcomes hundreds of thousands of passengers every day. The delicate construction of steel frame and stainless steel cables creates a glass envelope that guides travelers down to the platforms in a bright, light-filled atmosphere.

 

maximum precision for 105 t of steel

The façade consists of a 14.6 m high, A-shaped steel frame supported by a tightly tensioned network of stainless steel cables. A horseshoe-shaped edge beam and the massive “crown” at the top complete the primary supporting structure. In total, 105 t of steel were processed with the highest precision and refined in accordance with AESS-4 standards. The characteristic inclination of 45 degree results from the geometry of the frame structure. During installation, seele tensioned the cables to bring the cable façade into its final form, followed by glazing.

Equally sophisticated is the monitoring concept developed by seele. The required cable force measurement was implemented as a cloud-based solution. Invisibly integrated sensors record the pre-tensioning of the cables and ensure the long-term performance of the structure – without complex on-site measurements. This is a decisive advantage, especially at the highly frequented Penn Station.
