Located in the heart of Abu Dhabi’s international financial district, The Galleria Al Maryah Island is a luxury shopping mall featuring exceptional retail design as well as views of the skyline and the waterfront. Designed by Foster + Partners, the new Apple retail store is elevated and surrounded by black granite steps, over which water cascades downwards. Visitors reach the spectacularly conceived store via two outdoor bridges or a tunnel-like walkway, a passage with a structural glazing façade that connects the Apple Store to the shopping mall.

The impressive structural glazing, consisting of 36 large-format laminated safety glass panels, sets new standards for transparency and weightlessness in Apple’s retail design. With its precise execution, seele creates a striking link between modern architecture and technical innovation, lending a unique aesthetic to the design of the Apple Store.

apple architecture with milled grooves

The water feature continues in the walkway tunnel, where water flows over the side walls. The outer surfaces of the 18 laminated glass panels have a specially machined grooved texture that creates a fascinating interplay of light and colour. Depending on the viewing angle and lighting conditions, captivating visual effects emerge. The precisely calculated grooved texture, determined during the technical design phase, also determines the water flow speed and influences the structural behaviour of the glazing in the extreme climatic conditions of the site.
