where glass meets groove at Dartmouth’s Hopkins Center for the Arts

The modern extension of the Hopkins Center for the Arts, “the Hop”, preserves the original architecture and blends perfectly into the overall appearance of the Dartmouth college campus. seele engineered and realised the 175 sqm glass façade as well as a 200 sqm sheet metal façade with over 9 m in height for the cultural arts center.

The façade of the cultural arts center is particularly striking due to its tuning-fork-shaped mullion system. Two mullions are connected at the top and two at the bottom, creating this distinctive architectural feature. The right-hand mullion in each pair supports the glass.

The colour of the sheet metal façade and the mullions is also very noticeable. The metal sheets, coated with a Duraflon Flip Flop coating in the shade ‘Rosy Gold Light’, cover the eastern and western sides of the building and create a bronze look. 

The sheets are 3D-formed and made of aluminium, divided vertically into three segments. They were bent using the fluid bending process. In total, it results in a 200 sqm large sheet metal façade.
