7,080 sqm glass roof at chadstone shopping centre

The Chadstone Shopping Centre in Melbourne received a 7,080 sqm steel and glass roof spanning up to 44 m. The dome-like glass roofs flood both levels of the gallery-like building with light. seele paid special attention to the local climatic conditions, as high temperatures can cause deformations of up to 135 mm over the 260 m length of the glass roof. It is therefore vital that the supports for the glass roof on the building not only withstand the high loads of the roof, but also include a sliding bearing to accommodate the very considerable deformations caused by temperature fluctuations.

time is precious – seele uses it sparingly

The tight schedule, combined with rapidly changing weather conditions, required a production-oriented approach. With less than twelve months available for design, fabrication planning, and production, the installation of the steel and glass roof was to be completed within an additional eight months. seele developed a precise logistics plan for the roof by pre-assembling components 35 km away and delivering them to the construction site by truck just in time. A detailed assembly plan ensured smooth installation. This enabled seele to complete the final assembly within 143 days and provide the operator with a high level of investment security.
