revitalisation that complements heritage

exclusive glazing solutions for the iconic battersea power station

Located south of the Victoria Station on the Thames, the former coal-fired Battersea Power Station is one of Europe’s largest brick structures. As part of a revitalisation project, this historic building has been transformed into a 186,000 sqm mixed-use complex. seele was responsible for various façade types, including 5,746 sqm of heritage windows, 264 sqm of Juliet balconies and two panoramic windows overlooking the Thames. The heritage window profiles were designed to closely replicate the original 1930s design, effectively balancing the need for modernisation with the strict requirements of heritage preservation.

hand-blown glass and heritage windows

One of the most challenging aspects of the project from a heritage perspective was to preserve the aesthetic and structural integrity of the building while implementing modern solutions. This focus is particularly evident in the 384 sqm shop façades and 78 doors (659 sqm in total). The horizontal folding doors, made from steel frames and panels, feature intricate, laser-cut details. Hand-blown glass in various colours, crafted by a papal court glassmaker, was applied to the insulating glass of the doors, enhancing the retro aesthetic of the heritage windows.

interior architecture with exclusive design elements

Inside, a retro-style façade with 6,500 glass blocks reinforces the building’s historical character. This restoration was approached with the same sensitivity as the heritage windows. seele completed 6,500 sqm of interior façade areas that clad the office atrium, entrance lobby, south atrium, and elevator shafts. The south atrium for Apple’s European headquarters stands out with exclusive design features, including 24 oriels (glass bay windows) crafted from J-shaped glass panels and 3D bronze cladding. Due to the delicate nature of the materials, each component had to be installed with the utmost care.
