glass roof defines transportation project in chicago

a symphony of glass and aluminium: a glass dome transforming chicago’s cityscape

In the heart of the vibrant Chicago Loop, the redesign of State/Lake Station is creating more than just a modern transportation hub – it’s making a bold architectural statement in the urban landscape. The 2,300 sqm dome-shaped glass roof by seele transforms the busy train station into a bright and welcoming hub of mobility. A transportation project that shines as a landmark for all of Chicago.

a glass dome shaping the urban space

At the core of the design is the filigree, elliptical glass dome that spans across a street intersection. To the east and west, linear canopies extend 49 m and 68 m along the tracks, seamlessly continuing the overall architectural concept. For this project, seele is fabricating and installing approx. 3,000 aluminium-and-glass units, forming a precise rectangular grid that defines the station’s distinctive appearance.

installation of the transportation project during ongoing rail operations

seele is responsible for the precise installation of the glass units onto the site’s steel structure – all while train operations continue, right in the dense urban core of Chicago. This demanding environment requires the highest levels of precision, logistical coordination and expertise in execution.
