mullion-transom façade for the new podium at alexanderplatz in berlin

The flat-roof building at one of Berlin's most famous locations, the Alexanderplatz, has been the seat of the Berliner Verlag since its construction in 1973, to which the Berliner Zeitung and Berliner Kurier belonged. After the publishing house moved out in 2017, the GMP architectural office developed plans for the reconstruction of the existing façade as well as for a planned extension: the so-called "new podium". seele was commissioned to realise the façade construction of the extension as well as the measures on the existing building. The building complex and the extension provide space for offices and administration rooms for various companies as well as retail space on the ground floor. The special feature of the new building is the doubly inclined roof area, which is made even more striking by the diagonals running towards the corner and the very slender, pointed gable surfaces.

  • An 8,700sqm façade has been realised for the lower part, which has a reinforced concrete skeleton structure as supporting scaffolding. In order to keep the building envelope as open and transparent as possible, the steel columns of the substructure are kept very slim. Another special feature: the podium borders directly on the high-rise slab of the Pressehaus am Alexanderplatz. This panel is one of Berlin's monuments and therefore special requirements had to be met during the construction work. The challenge here was to keep the basic structure as slim as possible.
