apple orchard road in singapore - 14m high all-glass façade

South-East Asia has had its first Apple retail store since the store in Singapore opened in 2016. It is located in the centre of the city, integrated in the “Knightsbridge” building complex in the famous shopping district along Orchard Road. This store, too, complies with Apple’s new design guidelines, which include the characteristic maximum transparency and openness of the façade. In this project, seele was responsible for design, production and installation.

The façade consists of 13 panes of insulating glass that are 3.10m wide and more than 14m high. They are stabilised by 10 glass fins. At top and bottom, steel or stainless steel brackets hold the panes of glass in place. Three double-leaf, 3m high glass doors with stainless steel handles and hinges have been elegantly integrated in the façade. There is a glass canopy above each pair of doors.

Assembly in the heart of Singapore

This project incorporates the largest panes of insulating glass used so far on any of the Apple retail store projects in which seele has been involved. With a height exceeding 14m, maximum precision was called for during erection. And like with almost every city-centre project, logistics presented another huge challenge. Therefore, most materials were delivered and installed at night. seele completed all its work on site in just five months so that the store could open on time in May 2016.

  • Because of the height of 14m of each pane of insulating glass, the logistics and installation of the facade of the Apple Knightbridge store in Singapore was a great challenge.
