exclusive shopping experience with an all-glass walkway made by seele

Every year hundreds of thousands of tourists from all over the world come to the charming Kaprun, a ski resort in Salzburg,  Austria. Bruendl Sports, one of the largest sports and rental retailer in the Austrian Alps, is expanding its flagship store in the centre of Kaprun. The aim is to create a first-class shopping experience and at the same time a wonderful place to linger.

The architects blocher partners is planning a 10m long glass walkway, which overhangs the Kaprun Ache. Standing on it, one has a vertical view of 15m down to the crystal blue mountain river. This viewing platform is to offer a breathtaking panorama of the snow-covered alpine landscape and the Kitzsteinhorn. It is to be accessible via the terrace of the planned restaurant. seele is realising the 10m cantilevered walkway. The design envisages 11m long lateral glass stringers, which function as transparent fall protection as well as static supports for the glass walkway.

  • The side glass panes are attached by means of stainless steel tension fasteners in the upper area and by support in the lower area. This solution ensures maximum transparency. The direct location on the river is a logistical challenge. The pre-installed, approx. 9t heavy glass bridge has to be lifted from the street side over the existing building to the installation point on the fourth floor.

This project enables seele to finally realise a building project in Austria - and then such a spectacular one.

Installation of the all-glass walkway

As the building of the flagship store is located right next to the mountain river "Ache" in Kaprun, the glass walkway had to be installed in one piece. Therefore, it was preassembled in Germany and then transported to the site in Austria. With a 250t heavy telescopic crane and its 45m long jib, the walkway was lifted above the building and then positioned on the 4th floor for being installed. After the fixation of the walkway, the installation frame was removed.

By using an installation frame and a 45m long jib, the all-glass walkway was installed in 15m height.
