Las Vegas, the city in the state of Nevada, is known for its colourful casinos, legendary luxury hotels and not to forget its glamorous shows and events. With »Sphere«, Madison Square Garden Entertainment Corp realised an entertainment temple in a new dimension. The spherical building with a diameter of 160m was equipped with an ultra-high definition media façade both inside and out. But the chief attraction takes place inside the sphere: That’s where visitors can immerse themselves in virtual worlds with an incredible intensity. The 18,600 seats and 5,000 standing positions are completely enveloped, including overhead, by the largest spherical LED screen (immersive screen) in the world.

seele was commissioned to realise the gigantic LED screen inside the sphere, spanning an area of approx. two soccer fields, and applied its expertise to engineer and build the detailed substructure that holds the immersive media technology.

  • To compensate for the existing primary structure’s construction tolerances, two additional structures were added. The entire suspended substructure, which is itself a highly complex structural system, was fitted with 65,000 LED modules. The maximum allowable installation tolerance for the width of the gap between LED modules was irrefutable in order to achieve a homogeneous, ultra-high resolution image surface. In total, roughly 47,500 distinct and high-precision components were produced, no two of which are alike. seele's scope also included 229 openable hatches in the LED screen which enable a spectacular show.

    seele has been working with minimum tolerances for other building envelopes, but this media façade demanded new technical concepts from planning to production and installation. Maximum precision had to be adhered throughout the entire supply chain.
