Retractable membrane roof and unique understanding of materials for the No.1 Court at The Championships, Wimbledon

07/12/2019 In recent years the second largest stadium at The All England Lawn Tennis Club, the No.1 Court, has been completely refurbished. For this purpose, façade construction specialist seele realized 13 different façade types and a 6,000sqm retractable membrane roof over the whole stadium.

The heart of the refurbishment is the retractable membrane roof made of PTFE over the entire stadium. A PTFE membrane was selected in order to provide optimum conditions for the players even in rain, as the material is translucent, extremely resistant and dirt repellent. The roof can now be closed in just 8 minutes and thus prevents matches having to be interrupted during rain.

seele was responsible for all the external façades around No.1 Court, work that included both the upgrade to the existing façade and the complete extension with 15 hospitality suites on the fourth floor. A total of approx. 8,350sqm of façades were constructed with various materials such as aluminium, wood-plastic composite, laminate pallets and glass.

The work that façade specialist seele carried out for the Wimbledon No.1 Court project once again shows the company’s extensive expertise when it comes to knowledge of diverse materials, innovative skills, reliability, perfectly coordinated logistics and flexibility during construction.
